Hitwise reported recently on the dramatic growth of online-video viewing in the UK. Time to start faking a Brittish accent in my vlogs. The most interesting part of this, for me, is that YouTube's total
traffic is higher than the next 10 properties combined. And YouTube's
69% share of the top 10 is followed by a paltry 5.6 percent share by
the BBC. Can it last?

Internet Video vs Digital TV
There is a reason why Content Delivery Networks exist. They exist because the internet is a best efforts medium. The internet will always be a best efforts medium, if only because of Net Neutrality. If all bits are created and delivered on an equal basis, then there is no way to be sure that the bits carrying your TV show will be delivered with any Quality of Service assurances.CBS Launches Test of HD Video Streaming
New York
- CBS (NYSE: CBS) has launched a test of high-definition streaming on its website, offering
some clips in H.265/AVC format at 480p resolution through an HD player,
TechCrunch reported. The company plans to offer 720p and 1080p as well. Hulu,
the joint venture video service from News Corp. and NBC Universal, is also
experimenting with HD streaming, and currently offers 360p, 480p and 720p --
although the latter is delivered through progressive download rather than
streaming, due to bandwidth constraints.

How Fat is Online Video's Long Tail?
The answer is: it depends. The question was asked today by Lester Craft over at Usertainment Watch: How fat will online video's "tail" be? (That is, the
virtually infinite period of time following the burst of views a video
gets upon its initial appearance.)Chris Anderson's notion of the long
tail is that it's typically quite thin or flat, and that it is
primarily the extended length of availability (vs. the comparatively
short life of products sold in typical brick-and-mortar stores) that
enables online offerings to remain profitable as many small sales
accumulate over time.

Microsoft & Limelight Rumor: Understanding What Limelight Networks Offers
Last week seemed to be the week of many CDN rumors, one of which was Microsoft being interested in buying Limelight Networks. While I have no idea if that is the case, the blog posts and articles that followed the rumor were a great example showcasing how many people really don't understand the product offering that the different CDN providers have in the market today. Too many are still comparing one CDN provider to another unfairly. The term "content delivery" is used way too generically these days and folks tend to speak to it as if it covers every type of content under the sun, even when it doesn't.Akamai Analysts Too Caught Up In Apple's New Movie Rental Service

Word association: P2P = Napster = disrupted the music industry. P2P technology certainly did that. Skype shook up telecoms and Joost may do the same for TV. P2P (Peer to Peer) networks could be a lot more. They could be the
last big disruptive technology online. The online world is increasingly
getting divided into a few mega firms that can afford to invest
billions in server farms (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Yahoo, eBay) and
the rest of us. Start-ups may love to have that "pay as you go
infrastructure", but it does create a huge barrier between the big
league and everybody else.
